Kaltura: Caption Privacy Information

IMPORTANT INFORMATION – PLEASE READ

Please be advised that the following information ONLY applies  when you ‘submit’ media for captioning. If you do not order captioning for your media in Kaltura then this information does not apply. All media uploaded to Kaltura via Canvas is hosted on servers at the University of British Columbia.

Once you click the ‘Submit’ button to order captions for a media entry,  a COPY of your media will be made on servers in the United States. The processing of all media sent for captioning is performed on these servers. Once processing is completed and the caption file is available on Kaltura at UBC, the media and caption files are automatically deleted from the servers in the United States. This applies to both machine and human captioning services.

Please note that it is technically possible for an employee of the service provider to access, view or listen to your media while it resides on these servers.

At this time, only machine captioning or automatic speech recognition (ASR) is enabled and available to instructors and course ISS free of charge

NOTE FOR INSTRUCTORS: Please be aware that the transcript of your media can be easily copied or downloaded by anyone who has access to the media e.g. a student accessing the Media Gallery in your course. If you have any questions or concerns please contact the LT Hub (lt.hub@ubc.ca).

UBC’s self-paced Kaltura training course provides step-by-step guides to uploading media and editing videos, creating interactive video quizzes, embedding videos in Canvas, and more. This page was written by LT Hub staff for the course and then adapted for our website.
