Inclusive Syllabus

One area that educators can begin to develop their EDI practices is through creating an inclusive syllabus. There are many approaches to do this. Below is a slideshow based on the recommendations by Fuentes, Zelaya, & Madsen (2021) to get you started.

Academic Integrity

With concerns about contract cheating and course work being shared online (through sites such as Chegg and Coursehero), there is a need to educate and empower students to make ethical choices. Review UBC recommended approaches on the UBC Teaching academic integrity website.

Read and share your views on the observations and reflections from faculty, staff and students during an online session with LDDI on academic integrity and its impact in online learning.

Alternative Grading Practices

Through alternative grading practices such as competency-based grading, specifications-based grading or ungrading, students are made to focus on their learning through meaningful feedback. Take a listen to Susan Blum on ungrading in episode 350 of the Teaching in Higher Ed podcast.

Tools

Turnitin is a tool you can use to empower students to reduce plagiarism and improve their writing. Please see an example from Dr. Leah Macfadyen’s online course where she provides an option for the students to use Turnitin to check their work before final submission.
