Diversity

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework that considers how to benefit all learners (universal) through the design, development, and delivery of a course. It is based on scientific understanding of how humans learn and aims to help teachers increase access and reach a diverse group of learners through reducing barriers and creating an inclusive classroom.

  • Multiple means of engagement: various ways to motivate and engage learners
  • Multiple means of expression: various ways for learners to demonstrate learning
  • Multiple means of representation: various ways for learners to construct knowledge

Digital Accessibility

UDL design principles promote the creation of learning materials that work for all learners. This involves a flexible approach to learning design using tools to support the customization and personalization for variable learning needs (CAST, 2018). Accessible and inclusive design benefits everyone, not just those with disabilities. Both UDL and W3C guidelines support flexibility in their approach to access and learning design which supports not only those students with disabilities but all learners and their differentiated learning needs.
