Hiding Column Information in the Connect Grade Center

With its numerous columns and rows, the Full Grade Center might seem like a daunting place to find oneself in, let alone to organize. It is a few weeks into the term, assignments are due and students need their feedback, so off one goes into uncharted waters. But it is not as hopeless a situation as you might think! In fact, there are two easy ways to organize the Grade Center.

Before diving into Column Organization, it must first be underlined that the Grade Center automatically creates a column for any gradable material in your course e.g. tests, assignments, surveys. There are also default columns created in the Grade Center that might clutter your view, usually including student information. These include but are not limited to students’ Program, Year Level, Majors, Minors and Faculty. As a result, for organizational purposes, you may want to hide some columns from your view and from students’ view.

Instructions

To hide columns from the instructor view of the Grade Center:

  1. Access the Full Grade Center. In your course, scroll down to Course Management and select Grade Center, then click on Full Grade Center.
  2. From the Full Grade Center page, click Manage at the top of the screen.
  3. Click Column Organization.
  4. Scroll down to the section titled Not in a Grading Period, showing all the columns in the Grade Center.
  5. Select the check-box of a column you would like to hide
  6. Scroll down to Show/Hide and select Hide Selected Columns.
  7. Click Submit to save the changes.

You might also want to hide columns that you have created for your own purposes from students, such as a Participation column. To hide columns from students, follow these simple steps:

  1. In the Full Grade Center page, select the down-arrow symbol on the right of the column title of the column that you would like to hide from students. You should be able to see a drop-down menu with several options.
  2. Click Edit Column Information
  3. In Column Options, select (No) to Show this Column to Students
  4. Click Submit to save the changes.

Quick Shortcut: In the drop-down menu next to the column title, select Hide from Students (on/off) or Hide from Instructor View.

Voila! One step further into mastering the Grade Center.
